Hello,
the facts:
Linux (SuSE 9.0), cvs version: 1.11.6.
Well, one thing to note is that this is an old version. Can you upgrade
to the most recent version? Even if it doesn't fix your immediate
problem, it does fix many bugs and security issues.

That's odd. The "Logging in to" line indicates that CVS knows it's using
:pserver:, but the "invalid connection method (ext)" suggests that CVS
is trying to use :ext:
Does it work if you explicitly specify the ROOT method, i.e.:
cvs -d :pserver:address@hidden:/home/repository login
Do you have $CVSROOT set, and if so what is its value? If not, what are
the contents of the file CVS/Root?
What is the output of 'cvs -t login' (this turns on a verbose tracing
output)?
What is the output of 'cvs version'?
