Yes, the project source code page that contains the CVS downloading
instructions has a link at the top to browse the source code on-line:

It's hard to say since you didn't bother to say exactly what kind of
error you got.

That's correct. You can skip the login complete provided you're running
a reasonably recent version of CVS. It works fine for me.
