On the spot. There were files in the repository where the branch tag had for some reason been transformed to version tags. If this was due to user error or a freak problem with CVS is hard to say, though user error is always the main suspect.

Seems like all files that caused troubles were added to the branch and thus created after the branch was. The solution is to remove the version tag where appropriate with "cvs tag -d ...". From what I have noticed has this no effect on branch tags, but deletes the version tag. I then re-add the files that were missing from the branch with a "cvs up -j ..." and things look brighter already.
