Quite often when I was using a tool that allowed you
to do it easily.  Hardly ever under CVS 'cos it's such
a pain.

Also, your question is irrelevant.  I know many people
who never look at the version history of a file;
they're content with simply knowing the current state
of the file.  Does this mean that a command like "cvs
log" is unnecessary?

You can then say that all of CVS isn't necessary since
you can do anything that CVS can do with RCS and some
scripting.  In fact, I'm sure you're aware that this
was how CVS got started.

So, the question is, should this be done by something
wrapping CVS, or should it be done by CVS proper? 
IMO, it should be the latter.  Is it no wonder why
noone is coming out with an open source tool that
wraps CVS to afford this feature, but instead coming
out with yet another VC tool that does it right?

We're commenting on what CVS is lacking, not what RCS
is lacking.
