I think the trouble is in the gcc version you are using. I remember  
that igraph 0.5 does not compile yet with gcc 4.3, and maybe Debian  
testing has just bumped the gcc version number to 4.3. It should work  
either with gcc 4.2 or the most recent tarball from the dev tree  
(maybe Gabor can send you one -- I'm on holiday right now and I can't  
access the dev tree right now).
