I am confident that I would only need something like
(defconst tex-font-lock-keywords
(tex-font-lock-match-suscript
(1 (tex-font-lock-suscript (match-beginning 0)) append)))
"Default expressions to highlight in TeX modes.")
But this gives me an error because of the numeric value 1
