It would be hard to remove them, since they are in such wide-spread

Is there any possibility to add to Texinfo some extension facility,
perhaps even with a different syntax, that will be more clean and
easier to implement in texinfo.tex?
An alternative would be to collect a large number of macro uses, find
out what missing features force people to use macros, and then
implement those features in the language.
