generating î in texinfo

hi

i would like to write î in texinfo

so @^i put a hat on the i but does not remove the dot

in tex \i removes the dot and so \^\i outputs correct

but in texinfo @i{} stands for italic

if i try to use the \catcode
\catcode`\î=\active \def î{\^{\i}}
before the \input texinfo it does not work

must i use @iftex @tex ... like sections ?
