That's true, there is no simple example.

In the texinfo source distribution there are two scripts, one called
fix-info-dir and one called gen-dir-node. Both purport to generate a dir
file from whatever's installed. Neither is part of the texinfo system
yet, which is why they're not documented. Read comments at the top of
each script for info.

I'm interested in any feedback you might have on them :).
