thanks Carlo - I just registered on discourse and will post the question there. I understood that source based packages are cross-platform, I have created/maintained several octave packages for Debian/Fedora (https://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=fangqq@gmail.com), and it works fin. However, my question is regarding mex based packages - especially packages that are not distributed via OS-specific software repos. supporting mexext in octave is a solution but I don't know if this is any prior discussion on this.

Hi,
First of all, consider moving this discussion to the Octave discourse channel
here : https://octave.discourse.group/c/help
Octave is transitioning its help forum there and you will get definitely more
attention if you write there.

As for your question, the default form of deployment of extensions for Octave
is in the form of packages :
https://octave.org/doc/v6.4.0/Creating-Packages.html

packages are source based, so they are inherently cross-platform.
