Thanks for the reply. I installed gui-octave from the dmg file located here: https://octave-app.org/Download.html

I am running mac os x high sierra (10.13.6).

I think it's important to add how you've installed GNU Octave 4.4.1 on
macOS because there are plenty of options: homebrew, macports, fink
(https://wiki.octave.org/Octave_for_macOS) , the native app
(https://octave-app.org/) and I'm sure I've missed some.
