This was a bug in Octave 3.8.1, which is quite an old version of Octave
by now. See https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?42043 for details.

Improved versions of Octave are available in Ubuntu 16.04 or in the
backport PPA: https://launchpad.net/~octave/+archive/ubuntu/stable
