In short, io-2.4.4 is primarily a bug fix release, yet it offers a few new features that may help users on Window 7 and below, maybe even 8 and 8.1, to cope with UTF-8 characters in the Octave terminal when reading from / writing to XML-based (spreadsheet) files.
