I agree with the tab switching, but the simultaneous view is already an option.

When you're looking at the editor tab, on the title lines of each part
of the GUI you should see a small x and a small icon that looks like
overlapped windows to the left of the x.  Although the tooltip is
illegible with the current color scheme, this window icon will pop the
editor out into a new window. It should stay there on subsequent
closing/loading of octave.  If you want it anchored within the Octave
window, but viewable side-by-side with the command window, just drag
it back onto the Octave window and play with the different position
options that pop up.
