If you enter "help format" in Octave you will see several options on how to
format output, e.g. "format short". I assume this should also work for
results obtained by the symbolic package.
Are you sure that octave is the best choice for your computations? It sounds
like that a computer algebra program like Mathematica or Maxima
(http://maxima.sourceforge.net) is better suited. Octave can do some
symbolic computations but it's strength is rather in linear algebra.
Even http://www.wolframalpha.com could be sufficient for your purposes.
