I'm having the same problem as was reported here 2 years ago:
http://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/Bug-in-script-for-plotting-td4649637.html#a4649711

Fresh install of octave on mac os yosemite via homebrew following these
instructions.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IgjRXNyh4Qq59DUoDQ-KTaUzMETpQbkizHf56VKKEVM/edit?usp=sharing

When I run this command, the plot seems do display correctly, but I get this
error:

❯❯ surf(peaks)
❯❯
gnuplot> nset view;
         ^
         line 0: invalid command

Any suggestions?
