This is a very good news. I've scribed some details of the idea on my octave wiki user-page:

I am not really sure what is the formal way to proceed from this point, but my guess is we should discuss together with Olaf Till if what I have written there makes any sense.

We probably should move our talk to the octave-maintainers group, since this is where all the discussion regarding Summer of Code projects takes place.
