Hi Ben,

      Thank you very much for your reply! I uninstalled the Octave which was installed via the binary installer (since I could not click on the icon of Octave, I thought it had some problem) and re-installed Octave via Homebrew according to http://wiki.octave.org/Octave_for_MacOS_X . But I was still unable to plot in Octave though I re-installed gnuplot as you suggested. Later I found another webpage where you were answering the same quesiton: http://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/Mac-problem-with-plotting-td4665373.html . Then I realized that the I had to add setenv ("GNUTERM", "X11") to octaverc. Now it works! Thanks again for your valuable suggestion!

Best,
Haitao

However, I cannot make 1 and 6 in the link. Then I started Octave from the Launch Pad and run a simple script containing the following code:

The problem is that the default configuration of Homebrew's gnuplot doesn't support any terminals for displaying the plots.  To add support for x11, ...

        brew uninstall gnuplot;
        brew install gnuplot --with-x

I don't know if Homebrew supports qt or not.  You might experiment with that ... or ask the Homebrew help list.

Homebrew definitely doens't provide Aquaterm.  But if you are up to a bit of hacking, you'll first need to download and install Aquaterm

        http://sourceforge.net/projects/aquaterm/

And then setup the Homebrew build of gnuplot to link to the Aquaterm libs.  If you need help with that, please inquire on the Homebew and/or gnuplot help lists.

Beware of multiple installs of Aquaterm and/or gnuplot.  You'll save yourself a lot of head-aches if you only have one of each installed on your computer.

Ben
