Plotting with MacPorts Octave 3.8

Has anyone been able to plot anything with the Octave 3.8.1 currently on 
MacPorts? My system
   octave-3.8.1_2+atlas+gcc48
hangs up with the simplest plot request, e.g.,
   octave> plot ([3,2,5])

I have no problems with the Octave 3.8.0 installed via the binary installer at 
Octave Forge
   http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/files/Octave%20MacOSX%20Binary/
