Making a source code change when building MXE-Octave |

As I understand it, the MXE build process always extracts from the *.tar.gz
files that are in the pkg folder.
So how do you make a source code change to Octave if you are using the MXE
building process? Do you edit the file and add it back to the tar.gz file,
then change the checksum so that the build process works?
Is there an easier way?
