Hi,
I know close to nothing about Dicom and the Dicom package,
but I noticed the following in your message:

You actually do.
clang ships with Xcode and is the
default compiler on Mavericks.

if the binary you refer to is the dmg installer
built by me and distributed on Octave Forge, then
you also have the gcc compiler suite version 4.7
installed into /usr/local/octave/3.8.0/
mixing those two compilers is not a good idea.
At least for me it always created problems.
