I'm afraid I don't understand exactly what's the problem. You say that octave
hangs, but you also say farther down that mpi calls made in octave are
working. How are those two statements not contradictory?
I can tell you that octave 3.6.x, and 3.8.x, either from Debian, or self
compiled, with the latest version of the mpi package, using Open MPI, has
been working fine for me for a number of years now. I believe you might need
to check your Octave installation.
