Saving Files in Octave

To Whom it May Concern:

I have just successfully compiled and installed octave-3.6.4 on a Mac Pro running Lion (OS X 10.7). Interpretation of command line input seems to run reliably. However, as you can see from the following

octave-3.6.4:7> matrix
matrix =

   1   4   7
   2   5   8
   3   6   9

octave-3.6.4:8> save file1
error: save: unable to open output file 'file1'
octave-3.6.4:8>

I repeatedly get error messages when I try to save work to a file. I suspect that I need to set something up in my environment such as a location / directory in which to save work but do not readily find references as to how to go about this and to check it.

I would appreciate it much if you could help me on in this regard. We are evaluating octave for use in our student physics labs and obviously we need to bullet proof this for students.
