I made the initial release of the package netcdf-1.0.0 which provides an interface compatible with matlab. Unlike the package octcdf, this package allows to use netcdf4 features such as transparent compression, checksum and variable groups.

The package implements the high-level functions (ncread, ncwrite,...) and the low-level functions. However, octave does unfortunately not yet support namespace (is this in the making?).

There's preliminary support in the classdef branch. It started here:
