They're mostly identical.  Unless there is some bug or unimplemented function in Octave that you use in your m-file, you should be able to run it in Octave.

what James said is correct, just try running the m-file under both Octave and Matlab, you should get the same results. If not, we'd appreciate it if you let this list know about the discrepancy, as except for a few known exceptions incompatibilities are treated as bugs that need to be addressed, especially if numerical output is different.
