Yes, it is indeed there!  Thanks again.  I didnt know that different releases of octave could work with different package versions.

It looks like Ubuntu has version 1.1.3 of the signal package:

    http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/octave-signal

There is a newer release, 1.2.0.

Probably the easiest thing for you to do is just download the 1.2.0
tarball and get the hilbert function from it:

    http://octave.sourceforge.net/signal/index.html
