Am I correct in that you are trying to install the octave 3.6.2-5
package and the octave-image and octave-java packages from the Ubuntu
12.10 repositories and that is the installation that is failing?

That set of packages does install and work for me.

This sounds like an Ubuntu-specific packaging or configuration problem
so somewhat off-topic for this list. I'd recommend you ask this question
