I think that if you look in the archives looking for "editor" you will
find some suggestions.
One possible choice is Emacs, which has a specific mode for Matlab
files, with highlighting and indentation, and additionally lets you run
Octave in a subwindow (a buffer, in Emacs terms) and other optional
goodies.
