It looks like something else on your system is wrong.
I suggested to install in a subdir w/o spaces as I had the same experience
as you (slow response etc) which turned out to have been caused by
installing in C:\Program Files (and I'm not a novice Octave user - everyone
makes mistakes now and then).
Well.... I do have a suggestion: try one of the MSVC Octave installers from
Octave-Forge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/files/Octave Windows binaries/Octave
3.6.1 for Windows Microsoft Visual Studio/
(watch out for line wrap)
at least it starts up a lot faster than the MinGW version. It has no
compiler included, though.
If that version is also as slow as you suggest, I look for other issues in
your Win7 setup.
