The first line indicates the file was supposed to be Matlab -v5. That's an old 
format, and is not dependent on HDF5.

        MATLAB 5.0 MAT-file, Platform: PCWIN64, Created on: Fri Feb 11 20:43:10

My guess, is the file has been corrupted.
