SIMPLE TUTORIAL WITH CYGWIN AND OCTAVE

Hello

I am a NEWBIE 

I am trying to simulate a dynamic system on a Win7 machine using octave,
under cygwin, much like
using matlab

I have a XL data file under win7 and I just loaded octave running with
cygwin

How do I load xl files into octave produce results from simulation and print
results.
I m new to this whole set up
Is there a simple tutorial anywhere? with cygwin and win7
is there anyone here who is in NYC Columbia or NYU who might be able to show
me
