Good! I'll try this weekend, after some HD reorganization - lately I'm
drowning in Octave-3.6.x test versions :-)

AFAIK the PKG_ADD/PKG_DEL mechanism only works if it lives in
/lib/octave/packages/... I don't know why it now ends up in
/share/octave/packages/

In the meantime, while you were building, I committed some more fixes to the
io pkg in svn.
Don't worry: for users, a simple "pkg install -forge io" will take care of
this...
