ft_render

When I run any (thus far tried) plot command, the plot seems to work fine,
but I get several lines of 'ft_render "unable to load appropriate font"'
printed to the terminal.  I have both gnuplot-1.0.1 and plot-1.1.0
installed.  How can I check which font it's expecting, and find and install
it? 

(octave 3.4.3 installed under Ubuntu 11.10 on amd64 architecture)
