Uninstalled QtOcatve
Running GnuOctave
Create .octaverc file in home directory
Edit .octaverc file so it contains: edit editor "gedit %s"
Done.
It would seem that my previous problems with setting this were due to some
incredibly unclear and indeed incorrect instructions on various other sites
and forums.
@Jordi: thanks for the advice on QtOctave, as for the blaspheming, why use
the perfectly adequate arrow key to move right when C-f will do it for you?
Nano is the limit of my geek skills I'm afraid.
