ok, after installing the latest octave 3.4.3 from source and trying to read
the troublesome files again without success I filed a bug report now:
"bug #34634 Mat-File readable by MatLab but not by octave"
I had a look at the source myself, but the coding in ls-mat5.cc is nothing
for a quick trial.
(not that I really expected it to be)
