Thanks for the quick reply! (And to those who private messaged me!)

I checked and the package is definitely there and loaded:
Package Name  | Version | Installation directory
--------------+---------+-----------------------
          io *|  1.0.12 | /usr/share/octave/packages/3.2/io-1.0.12

Tried loading it and running again and it still says:

octave:5> textread
error: `textread' undefined near line 5 column 1
octave:5> help textread
error: help: `textread' not found

Any more ideas?
