octave has a printf function which allows fine grained tweaking of output. Maybe you consider to use that (it makes use of C style format strings. More info can be found here http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/doc/interpreter/C_002dStyle-I_002fO-Functions.html#C_002dStyle-I_002fO-Functions
