octave-3.0.5 behavior:

octave:1> foo{1} = "a"
foo =

{
  [1,1] = a
}

octave:2> foo{2} = "ab"
foo =

}

octave:3> foo{3} = "abc"

  [1,2] = ab

Invalid call to numel.  Correct usage is:
