The reason I installed fort77 and f2c is that octave 3.4 requires a fortran compiler. 
So are you saying don't even install octave 3.4 because it doesn't work and just use 3.2?

1) Drop the fort77 and f2c stuff (why did you install them in the first
place?).

2) apt-get build-dep octave3.2
