Looks like a bug. The grid linewidth should be controlled by the axes linewidth property, but is is not.

I'll file a bug report.

It is inconvenient, but as a work around you can write a script to draw the grid lines and set their linewidth. To determine the coordinates for the grid lines, look at the axis properties xlim, ylim, xtick, and ytick.
