I don't have any insight about what's going on. However, I do build
octave regularly on Ubuntu 10.4 64-bit (but I haven't gone to 10.10
yet and I don't use 32-bit). If perhaps some dependencies are missing
or bad versions are installed, a "sudo apt-get build-dep octave3.2"
may help?
