'Edit' Command Issues

I am obviously new to Octave. I have seen this question asked a few times,
however I believe that it was never clearly answered.
I am running Octave v3.2.3 on Mac OS X (10.6.5).
When I enter the 'edit' command, nothing happens. And by nothing, I mean
neither a text editor nor 'octave-3.2.3:3>' is returned. It looks as
such(dead):

octave-3.2.3:3> edit
|

Perhaps I need to configure an editor? Just a guess. Since I am new to this,
I would appreciate precise instructions. If one needs further information,
tell me what to input and I'll post the results.
