Can you post a code snippet which shows the usage and which octave version, 
operating system you are using.

With an example of the given size 720x1000 and octave 3.2.4 (backend fltk) on 
linucx (opensuse 11.3 64 bit) it takes clearly less than 1 second to show the 
graph (mesh and surf).
