I assume the OP meant how many bits are stored in a double (53 according to the
wiki article: 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_point#Internal_representation)

Perhaps the question should be "does octave have a quad datatype?"

Additionally, I would wonder if the OP's data is ill conditioned.
