Not at all, database access via java is as performant as access via native 
libraries. I work now with jdbc for 6 years (and before worked with database 
access from c++ via the native lib's to sybase and oracle. postgres) in my 
job, and can clearly not see any difference in performance or cpu load.
Internally both use essentially the same technology, both are usually heavily 
optimized by the database vendors (be it FOSS like postgres or proprietary).
