Gnuplot errors?

Dear all

I wrote a script to produce figures containing a few subplots. The script 
sometimes works as intended, but very often results in errors like this:

gnuplot> nset multiplot;
         ^
         line 0: invalid command


gnuplot> nset multiplot;
         ^
         line 0: invalid command

warning: division by zero

gnuplot> nset multiplot;
         ^
         line 0: invalid command
--------------------------------------

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

My set up is as follows:
- Mac OS X 10.6
- Octave 3.2.4 from Macports
- Gnuplot 4.4 patchlevel 0 from Macports
