imresize results in blurry image

Dear list,

First my apologies if this had previously been discussed in the list.  
I'm quite new to Octave and to this list.

I have a problem with the imresize function. My problem is that if I  
resize an image say to 80% of original size,
what I got is a very blurred version of the image. The only way to get  
sharp result is to use 'nearest' option, but
the resulting image is too blocky. Am I doing something wrong? I am  
used to Matlab's imresize function, and I
thought that the one in Octave would behave similarly.

I am running Octave 3.2.3 for Mac-PPC. The image processing package is  
image-1.0.13. I am running Mac OS X
10.5.8 on an iBook G4, with Xcode 3.1.2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
