Hello,
I do not know which version of octave you are running and on which platform
(windows/linux/mac). I would expect that your copy of octave contains the user
manual, but for convinience you can also download the manual for the current
stable version 3.2.4 from my webspace

The manual itself is more a reference and not so much for learning octave.
There is a nice tutorial from Andreas Stahel from the University Biel which
you can find here
