accessing internals of graphic objects

Is it possible to get the data represented in a line or patch (filled polygon) graphics object as an array or matrix?
Is there a way to access the internals of a an axis object created with gca() ?
Is it possible to save plot objects to file for later use?
the builtin get and set functions seem minimally documented, do they allow this ?
