Thanks for the suggestion (an interesting function I didn't know), but
I'm not sure I see how it actually contributes a solution.  First, as
far as I can see 'stem' just gives you vertical lines -- not the
horizontal arrows I also need -- and despite trying I've found it
impossible to replace the default o marker.

Again, is this an Octave 3.0 thing?  I've noticed that various new
functions seem to be only partially implemented in practice ...
